Piano chords are the "backdoor" to improvisation and arranging on the piano or keyboard. From simple triads to multi-fingered polytonal super-chords, chords are the structure of music, and only a mastery of both intellectual knowledge and "hand knowledge" will get the player where she or he wants to go in music.
